What can you do if your blood sugar is too high?

High blood sugar can lead to a number of complications if it is left untreated. The good news is that there are several things that you can do in order to keep it under control. If your blood glucose is elevated, then you will need to do the following.

  • Test before eating and two hours after eating

This will show how effective the medication is for lowering your blood glucose. It will also tell you how certain foods affect your blood sugar. Talk to your healthcare provider about how often you should be taking your blood sugar.

  • Look for patterns

There is no need to be worried if you check your blood sugar one morning, and it is high. Anyone can have high blood sugar at a random time. However, if your blood glucose is elevated every morning, then this is a sign that your liver is creating an excess amount of sugar at night. You may need to start another medication.

  • Make small changes

Small changes can help lower your blood sugar. For example, you can reduce your carb intake and start exercising.

  • Think about what is going on

Irene Dunbar is a 73-year-old woman who lives in Durham NC. She checked her blood sugar, and it was 119. She realized that she drank orange juice yesterday, which is not something that she normally drinks. She knows that she has triggers and aims to avoid them.

  • Relax

The food that you eat is not the only thing that can affect your blood sugar. If you are stressed, then your blood sugar level can increase. That is why it is important for you to keep your stress level under control. You may have a lot on your plate, but it is important to know when it is time for you to relax.

  • Talk to your health care provider

Diabetes can get worse over time. However, one of the keys to keeping it under control is to consult with your doctor on a regular basis. Your doctor may recommend that you get additional testing. They may also recommend changing your treatment plan.
