There has been a slew of studies performed over the years that have determined the many foods in our diets that break down cognitive function in our brains and lead to harmful diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. These foods are ordinary household delights that many families eat regularly, so keep reading to make sure that your diet includes healthy foods that support positive brain function.

Dairy disasters

Cheese lovers should beware of the many dangers lurking in their deli drawers. Processed cheeses like the infamous brands that grace our grilled cheese sandwiches build up proteins in the body that contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s and should be avoided.

Other high-fat dairy products like milk, cheese and some yogurts are high in saturated fats, which also plays a factor in the development of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Margarine is another harmful ingredient because of the clumping of the protein beta-amyloid, which is a trademark characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Bad beverages

Sugary beverages should definitely be avoided if you want to foster a lifestyle that supports healthy brain function. Sodas, juices, sports drinks and energy drinks, when drank every day, have been linked to the development of dementia.

Most patients that are suffering from early-onset dementia once struggled with alcoholism and substantial drinking problems. Alcoholic drinks lower the cognitive function of your brain and ruin the overall health of your mind as well.

Meats & meat products to avoid

Most meats are nutritious and essential additions to our diet, but too much red meat can lead to issues with brain function. Red meat is high in iron, and diets high in red meat are known to have an increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s due to oxidative damage to the brain caused by iron.

Packaged meats like hot dogs, deli meats and bacon are chock-full of preservatives, sugars, and sodium that hinder brain function, while canned albacore tuna has high-mercury numbers that cause problems with cognitive function.

Problematic pantry foods

Many of us buy packaged baked goods for their nostalgic qualities and on-the-go convenience, but these foods are high in trans fats and are linked to lower brain volume, poor memory, and even a decline in cognitive functioning. Trans fats contribute to defective cell membrane composition, which leads to increased cell degeneration in the brain.

You should also avoid foods that are high in sodium as they increase your chances of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. Foods like white rice, white bread, pasta and cereals are dangerous because they are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and cause a spike in blood sugar, which causes inflammation in the brain.

These are just some of the foods that are probably in your kitchen right this moment and are silently contributing to the decline of your brain’s overall function. Create a healthier lifestyle for your brain and start making healthier choices by avoiding these foods to enjoy optimal brain function and a mind that won’t soon forget all of your precious memories.
